Setup Geyser & Floodgate (Cross-play)

Let Bedrock and Java players play together.

On this page

Geyser is a proxy that allows Minecraft Bedrock Edition players to join Java servers. Floodgate provides the ability to log in without a Java account, while ViaVersion and ViaBackwards maintain version compatibility. This guide covers installation, configuration, and basic security tips so Bedrock players can play safely.

Preparation#

Before starting, make sure your server:

  • Uses Paper, Spigot, or another compatible fork.
  • Has a backup of the server folder and configuration.
  • Has the ViaVersion and ViaBackwards plugins (without both, Bedrock players may not be able to join or may run into version issues).

Installation Steps#

Step 1: Download the Required Plugins#

Visit the official plugin sites:

Make sure you get versions compatible with your Java server version.

Step 2: Install the Plugins on the Server#

  1. Stop the server through the control panel.
  2. Upload the Geyser .jar file (if using the plugin version) and Floodgate to the plugins folder.
  3. Upload ViaVersion and ViaBackwards to the plugins folder.
  4. Restart the server.
  5. Once the server is back online, the plugins will create their respective configuration folders.

Step 3: Configure Geyser and Floodgate#

  1. Open the plugins/Geyser-Spigot/config.yml file (or config.yml in the appropriate folder).
  2. Adjust the proxy address and port if needed (address/port).
  3. Set remote to point to your Java server (localhost:25565 if running on the same machine).
  4. In the plugins/Floodgate/config.yml file, enable skinProtection and motd if desired.
  5. If your server connects to a database or uses other plugins, additional configuration may be needed in the auth-type section.

Step 4: Handle Version Compatibility#

  • ViaVersion allows higher-version clients to join.
  • ViaBackwards allows lower-version clients to join.
  • Edit the plugins/ViaVersion/config.yml and plugins/ViaBackwards/config.yml files if you want to set version limits or enable auto-update features.

Security and Bedrock Tips#

  • Enable the session Floodgate setting so Bedrock players cannot modify UUIDs.
  • Don't use the default 19132/19133 ports for Geyser if your server is on a public network without firewall protection.
  • Consider additional security plugins (AuthMe, LuckPerms) to apply the same permissions to all players.

Common Troubleshooting#

Bedrock Players Can't Join

Make sure you're running Geyser on the same server with the configured port, and that no firewall is blocking the proxy port (default 25565 for Java and 19132 for Bedrock).

Incompatible Versions

Update or adjust the ViaVersion/ViaBackwards versions according to the client version being used. Check the plugin documentation for the list of supported versions.
