Install a Map / World

Upload your own map or world.

On this page

You can use your own world or a downloaded world (adventure map, survival map, etc.) on a Java server. This guide explains how to upload it.

Note

Make sure the world version/data format is compatible with your Minecraft server version. A world from a much newer version may fail to load.

How to Install a Map#

  1. Stop the Server#

Open Console, press Stop, and wait until Offline.

  2. Back Up the Old World (Optional)#

Open Backups → Create Backup if you want to keep the current world.

  3. Prepare the Map Folder#

Extract the map you downloaded (usually a .zip). Make sure it contains a folder with level.dat inside.

  4. Upload via SFTP or File Manager#

    • File Manager: open the Files tab, navigate to the server folder, then upload the map folder.
    • SFTP: connect an SFTP client and upload (see the Use SFTP guide). This is faster for large files.
  5. Set the Folder Name#

The server reads the world from the world folder by default.

    • Delete/rename the old world folder.
    • Rename the uploaded map folder to world.
  6. Start the Server#

Return to Console and press Start. The server loads the new map.

If the Map Has a Nested Structure#

Some maps create an extra folder (e.g., map/world/level.dat). Make sure level.dat sits directly inside the world folder, not in an extra sub-folder.

Verify#

Join the server and make sure you appear on the new map. If the server fails to start, check the console log — it is usually a folder structure or world-version mismatch.
