Configure Java Mods & Server Settings
Tweak mod configs and server.properties.
On this page
This guide will help you understand how to configure various settings and manage mods on your Minecraft Java Edition server. Good server management requires an understanding of configuration files and how mods interact with them.
General Configuration Tips#
Understand Configuration File Types
Minecraft Java servers and their mods often use .properties, .yml, or .json files for settings. Always check the correct format when editing.
Use the Right Text Editor
Avoid editing configuration files with apps like plain Notepad. Use a text editor with syntax highlighting support (such as VS Code or Notepad++) to prevent formatting errors.
Back Up Before Editing
Always make a backup of the configuration file or server folder before making major changes. This lets you return to a stable version if something goes wrong.
Example: Editing Configuration Files#
This section provides common examples of how to edit some important configuration files.
Step 1: Change server.properties Settings#
The server.properties file is the heart of your server settings.
- Open the Files tab in your server panel.
- Navigate to the server root folder.
- Find and edit the
server.propertiesfile. - Change values such as
max-players,motd, ordifficultyas you wish. - Save Content and Restart the server.

Step 2: Install & Configure Plugins/Mods#
To install plugins or mods, you need to upload the .jar file to the correct folder.
- Download the plugin/mod
.jarfile you want. - Open the Files tab in the server panel.
- Navigate to the
pluginsfolder (for plugins) or the appropriate folder for mods (depending on the mod loader you use, e.g.modsfor Forge/Fabric). - Upload the
.jarfile. - Restart your server.
- Once the server is running, the plugin/mod configuration files are usually generated automatically in each plugin/mod folder. Edit them as needed.
Troubleshooting#
Server Won't Start After Editing?#
Check the Error Log
Open the Console tab in your panel. Look for red error messages. These often indicate a configuration file problem, a missing dependency, or an incompatible version.
Validate Configuration File Syntax
Typos, extra spaces, or incomplete brackets in .yml or .json files can cause the server to fail to start. Use an online validator if needed.
Check Version Compatibility
Make sure all plugins and mods are compatible with the Minecraft server version and mod loader you use.
Try Reverting to a Previous Version
If you made a backup, restore the recently edited files to the previous version, then try starting the server.
Settings Not Changing?#
Make Sure the Server Was Restarted
Many configuration changes require a full server restart to take effect.
Correct File Location
Make sure you're editing the configuration file in the right location. Some plugins may keep their config folders in unexpected places.
Config Overrides
Some settings may be overwritten by other configurations (for example, global settings vs. world-specific settings).
